ALPHA Prototype
An Alpha Prototype demonstrates the form and fit aspects of a product concept. This is the first step in turning a concept into physical reality. At this point, the dimensions of the original design intent are rendered using 3D CAD technology. Once the dimensions are finalized, an entry level prototype is created utilizing state of the art rapid prototyping technology. The 3D solid model is then tested for dimensional accuracy and provides the beginning stages of any functional aspects.

BETA Prototype
A Beta Prototype demonstrates the form/fit/function aspects of the product. At this point, actual engineering principles are applied to the design to optimize the functionality of the product. A Beta Prototype is an excellent way to produce a cost-effective functional model that overcomes the initial need for full scale manufacturing production. Beta Prototyping may include, but is not limited to, simulated injection molding, metal fabrication, and electronic engineering.

PRESENTATION Prototype
A Presentation Prototype combines many of the techniques and features of Alpha and Beta Prototypes and results in what appears to be an “off the shelf” product. The Presentation model may be used to demonstrate the product to potential licensing prospects, or to simply justify the decision to move forward with full-scale production. Finally, a Presentation Prototype will incorporate all Form/Fit/Function/Presentation aspects in the final design.

Virtual Prototyping
The Harshaw Research Group utilizes sophisticated 3D software to create a photo-realistic rendering of a product concept known as a Phototype™. As the name suggests, a Phototype™ is a hybrid between a photograph and a physical prototype and is an exceptional way of presenting a product using graphic design technology with only a minimal investment.

Product Animation
When detail and mechanical function are important, a product animation is an ideal prototype solution. The Harshaw Research Group has the capability of producing a three dimensional photorealistic motion picture of a new product design. Such an animation offers unique control over lighting, texture, background, and material properties. This package is perfect for large projects with great mechanical detail where prototyping is not feasible or economically justified. Using high definition enhanced software, a product animation can be used to demonstrate a product in a computerized format that may be sent over e-mail or stored on a CD.
